Mohs reconstruction, in Scottsdale & Phoenix

Mohs reconstruction at Xynwell restores the eyelids and face after Mohs surgery for skin cancer. Every reconstruction is carefully planned to restore both function and appearance, helping protect the eye while achieving the most natural result possible.

Why reconstruction follows Mohs surgery

Mohs surgery removes skin cancer while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Once the cancer has been completely removed, a defect remains that must be reconstructed.

When these defects involve the eyelids or surrounding facial structures, reconstruction is about much more than closing the skin. The eyelids must blink, close comfortably, protect the surface of the eye, and maintain their natural appearance. Every reconstruction is individualized based on the size, depth, and location of the defect.

Q: Who repairs the area after Mohs surgery?

Mohs surgery and reconstruction are two separate parts of treatment. Your Mohs surgeon removes the skin cancer and confirms that all cancer has been cleared. Once that is complete, reconstruction restores the affected area.

Whenever possible, reconstruction is coordinated in advance and performed the same day or shortly after Mohs surgery, minimizing the time between cancer removal and repair.

The Xynwell approach

Restoring function first. Appearance always.

Every Mohs defect is unique, and no two reconstructions are exactly alike. Treatment begins by evaluating the location, size, depth, and surrounding tissues before selecting the most appropriate reconstructive approach.

When the inner corner of the eyelids is involved, the tear drainage system is carefully evaluated and reconstructed when necessary.

The goal is never simply to close a wound — the priority is restoring comfortable eyelid function, protecting the eye, and creating the most natural appearance possible.

Recovery & results

Healing toward a natural result

Recovery depends on the size and complexity of the reconstruction. Most patients experience bruising and swelling during the first one to two weeks, followed by gradual improvement as healing progresses.

Incisions continue to soften and mature over the following months. Follow-up visits monitor healing, eyelid position, and scar maturation, and additional scar refinement may occasionally be recommended after healing is complete.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Mohs reconstruction cost at Xynwell?

Xynwell is a private, cash-pay practice. The cost depends on the size, location, and complexity of the defect and is reviewed during your consultation.

When is reconstruction performed after Mohs surgery?

Whenever possible, reconstruction is performed the same day as Mohs surgery after the cancer has been completely removed. In certain situations, reconstruction may be scheduled within the following day or two depending on the treatment plan.

Why is eyelid reconstruction different from other facial reconstruction?

The eyelids are highly specialized structures that must blink, protect the eye, distribute tears, and maintain proper eyelid position. Reconstruction focuses on restoring these functions while achieving the most natural appearance possible.

Will I have a scar?

Every surgical repair leaves a scar, but reconstruction is carefully planned along the natural contours and creases of the eyelids and face whenever possible. Most scars continue to soften and fade over the months following surgery.

What types of reconstruction might be needed?

The appropriate reconstruction depends on the size and location of the defect. Options may include direct closure, local tissue flaps, skin grafts, or more advanced eyelid reconstruction. The final plan is determined after the Mohs surgeon has completely removed the skin cancer.

Does reconstruction interfere with cancer treatment?

No. Mohs surgery and reconstruction are designed to work together. The cancer is completely removed and confirmed clear before reconstruction begins, allowing each stage of treatment to achieve its own goal without compromise.
